Moving On

Moving on is easy
Like taking candy from a child
Like transplanting a tree;
Ask those of us who have
How painful some cries can be
How quickly trees wither on unfamiliar soil.

Moving on is easy
Like walking miles on a treadmill
Satisfied with electronic validation
And feeling hollow just the same.

Moving on is easy
Like watching a fish flounder on land
Or discarded jellyfish dessicating on the beach
And gasping for breath yourself.

I have moved on
From one memory to the next
Like a bird in a burnt forest
Flitting from ash to dust.

Get Over It

I’m afraid I cannot
My grief cannot be bought
By words idly spoken;
Feeble sympathy tokens.

There’s nothing to get over
There’s no need to hover
I don’t know how to explain
There’s no happiness to feign.

It’s how blood’s vivid colour
Does not grow any duller
Wounds are forgotten and heal
Yet it remains, unseen, and real.

You can’t get over gravity
Or keep wishing for levity
You might get used to the feel
Yet it remains, unseen, and real.

You can’t get over a rainstorm
When you’re miles away from home
You’ll learn to appreciate the sting
But it won’t lend an urge to sing.

I can’t get over her death
When I heard her last breath
You won’t see me throw a fit
But no, I’m not over it.
